Suggested Answers for Test Questions 4 March 2008
1) Study Source A. What can you learn about the immigrants who came to Singapore?
L1-lifts information from source (1m)
Source A shows that the immigrants who came to Singapore were bold and adventurous and had wisdom and courage to build this country.
L2- Uses information from source and make attempts to explain from evidence (2-3m)
Source A shows that Singapore did not grow from a sleepy village into a successful country by chance. This implies that the early immigrants played a crucial role in contributing to this growth.
Source A also shows that our ancestors were bold and adventurous. This suggests that they were willing to take risks and had the courage to face challenges.
L3- Makes inferences using evidence from source and provides logical explanations with reference to the key topic of the questions (3-4m)
Source A shows that Singapore’s growth as a successful country is not by chance and being strategic alone. This implies that there might have been other factors like our forefathers/early immigrants who have contributed to its success. This meant that these immigrants probably possessed certain characteristics, like resilience and perseverance, which contributed to the growth of the country.
In addition, the source shows that our ancestors were bold, adventurous and had the wisdom and courage to build the country. This suggests that the early immigrants contributed greatly to the growth of Singapore through their sound qualities which enabled them to endure the hardships faced in starting the settlement.

This suggests that there might have been good communications with China which attracted the Chinese to come to seek better lives.
Source C also shows the growth of the population from 1824 to 1891. This implies that Singapore’s population has grown many times during that period and meant that there might have been a very stable workforce which helped the early settlement to grow.

Suggest Answer for Homework (Utility Question)
Level 1 One sided answer. Useful or Not useful without explanations. (1m)

Source B is useful in showing the reasons why the immigrants came to Singapore as there was drought and jobs were scarce.
OR / AND
Source B is not useful as they only show droughts and jobs scarcity.

Source B is useful in showing the reasons for the coming of the immigrants to Singapore. The source shows that drought in India caused destruction to crops. This suggests that there was probably a shortage of food. This meant that people would probably be forced to look for other ways to sustain their livelihood.
In addition Source B is also useful as it shows that there was a scarcity of jobs. This implies that the people would not have any means to earn money. This meant that the people would not be able to buy food as they have no jobs and thus were forced to leave India to come to Singapore for a better life.
Source B also shows that jobs were plentiful in Singapore as labourers were needed the moment a coolie landed in Singapore. This suggests that people were able to find jobs and earn a living. Hence Source B is useful in showing both push and pull factors resulting in the coming of the immigrants.
